Electric vehicles are no longer niche technology — they're the fastest-growing segment in the automotive market. With Tesla Model S, BMW i4, and Audi e-tron models now common on Oceanside roads, we at Cornerstone Automotive have invested heavily in EV-specific training and diagnostics to serve this community properly. Here's everything you need to know about owning one.
What You DON'T Have to Worry About
One of the biggest surprises for new EV owners is how much simpler the mechanical side becomes. With no internal combustion engine, there's no oil to change, no timing belt, no spark plugs, no exhaust system to rust, and no radiator coolant flush needed. Regenerative braking also dramatically reduces brake wear — many EV drivers go 80,000+ miles before needing a pad replacement.
"An EV owner's biggest long-term costs are tire replacement and battery health monitoring — not the engine services that dominate ICE vehicle budgets."
— James Park, EV Certified Technician
What You DO Need to Maintain
Tires
EVs are heavier than comparable ICE vehicles due to battery packs. This increases tire wear. Check pressure monthly and rotate every 6,000–8,000 miles.
Cabin Air Filter
EV HVAC systems work hard since cabin heating doesn't benefit from engine waste heat. Replace your cabin filter every 15,000–20,000 miles.
12V Auxiliary Battery
Even EVs have a small 12V battery that powers accessories. It degrades like any traditional battery and typically needs replacement every 3–5 years.
Brake Fluid
Despite minimal caliper use, brake fluid still absorbs moisture over time. Flush every 2 years regardless of mileage to prevent internal corrosion.
Battery Health: The Most Important Factor
The high-voltage traction battery is the heart of your EV — and the most expensive component. Best practices for long battery life: avoid charging to 100% for daily use (keep it at 80%), avoid letting it drop below 10%, minimize DC fast charging when possible (Level 2 AC charging at home is gentler), and keep the vehicle out of extreme heat for extended periods.
At Cornerstone Automotive, we offer EV battery health diagnostics using professional-grade equipment. We can provide you with a full state-of-health report, capacity analysis, and balance assessment of your battery modules.
