Every time we recommend synthetic oil during a service visit, we hear the same hesitation: "Is it really worth 2x the price?" The short answer is yes — almost always. But the long answer is more interesting, and it starts with understanding what oil actually does inside your engine.
What Oil Does (and Why It Degrades)
Engine oil serves five primary functions: lubrication of moving parts, cooling hot surfaces, cleaning away combustion deposits, sealing small gaps between rings and cylinder walls, and protecting against corrosion. Conventional oil is refined from crude petroleum — it works, but its molecular structure is irregular and inconsistent, meaning it begins to break down under high heat and pressure relatively quickly (typically 3,000–5,000 miles).
Synthetic oil is purpose-built in a laboratory. Its molecules are uniform in size and shape, giving it superior film strength, thermal stability, and resistance to oxidation. It flows better at cold temperatures (meaning your engine is lubricated from the moment of startup, not after 30 seconds of dry running), and it maintains its protective properties for longer mileage intervals.
"Every cold start is when your engine ages the most. Synthetic oil reaches every bearing surface within seconds — conventional oil takes much longer. That gap adds up over the life of an engine."

The Real Cost Comparison
| Factor | Conventional | Full Synthetic |
|---|---|---|
| Change Interval | 3,000–5,000 mi | 7,500–15,000 mi |
| Cold Start Protection | Moderate | Excellent |
| High-Temp Stability | Moderate | Excellent |
| Cost Per Change | ~$40–50 | ~$80–100 |
| Annual Cost (12k mi) | ~$120–150 | ~$80–100 |
When Do You Absolutely Need Synthetic?
If you drive a turbocharged engine, synthetic is non-negotiable. Turbochargers spin at 150,000+ RPM and run at extreme heat — conventional oil simply cannot protect them adequately. The same applies to high-performance vehicles, extreme climates, towing applications, and any engine with more than 75,000 miles on it. Most manufacturer-recommended intervals in modern vehicles are written to spec for full synthetic.
